Arsenal remain interested in signing Man City star Cancelo
Arsenal reportedly remain interested in signing Manchester City star Joao Cancelo this summer, as per the transfer insider Dean Jones.
After struggling with their defensive issues following William Saliba and Takehiro Tomiyasu’s injury absence, it has previously been suggested that the Gunners might look to sign a new centre-back and a right-back in this transfer window to reinforce their backline.
They have decided to make a move for Jurrien Timber and are on the verge of acquiring his service. It initially appeared that the North London club opted to address both issues by signing the Ajax star as he is a centre-back by traits but can also be deployed in the right-back position.
However, writing on Ranks FC Patreon, Jones has reported despite closing in on a deal to purchase Timber, Arsenal remain keen on signing Cancelo and they could make a concrete approach for him during the business end of this window.
The journalist further claims that Declan Rice and Timber’s arrival will become official soon but Arteta’s side won’t stop their spending spree just yet as they are planning to sign at least two more players this summer.
Cancelo to Arsenal
Jones wrote:
“Declan Rice will soon be officially unveiled and it is expected his announcements across social will make a lot of noise. Kai Havertz, Jurrien Timber and Rice will not be the end of the spending – expect a couple of signings to come later in the window. I mentioned Cancelo above – he could still be one to look towards in August.”
It has been suggested that after falling out with Pep Guardiola, Man City are ready to cash-in on Cancelo this summer and want £35m to let him leave. So, Arsenal will have to spend big to acquire the Portuguese’s services if they formalise their interest.
Cancelo is a highly talented player and has already showcased his qualities at the highest level over the last few years. So, he would be a great coup for Arsenal should they sign him this summer.
However, it is going to be interesting to see whether Arsenal opt to formalise their interest in signing Cancelo to bolster their defence if the player eventually leaves the Etihad Stadium in this transfer window.
