Arsenal reportedly remain keen on signing Aston Villa star Douglas Luiz this summer, as per Football Insider.

After narrowly missing out on winning the Premier League title last term, the Gunners have prioritised bolstering the squad in this transfer window to challenge on all fronts from next season.

They have already purchased Kai Havertz, Declan Rice and Jurrien Timber in this window and are on the verge of signing David Raya after agreeing on a deal in principle with Brentford.

However, it has been suggested that Mikel Arteta wants to add more firepower before the end of this window and signing a second midfielder is on the Spanish boss’ agenda.

Several players have been linked with a move to the Emirates Stadium over the last few months with Romeo Lavia, Bitello and Moises Caicedo being among them, but Luiz is reportedly on their radar as well.

Luiz to Arsenal

Arsenal hold a long-term interest in the Brazilian as they tried to purchase him last summer to strengthen their engine room and even submitted an official proposal.

But, Aston Villa rejected the bid as they weren’t willing to let their star man leave and in the end, Luiz opted to sign a long-term deal with the Villans.

However, according to the report by Football Insider, despite their failed pursuit last time around, Arsenal remain keen on signing the South American. They have been encouraged to purchase the midfielder this summer after Aston Villa decided to register their interest in signing Tyler Adams as a potential replacement for Luiz.

It is now going to be interesting to see whether Arsenal eventually opt to formalise their interest in signing the former Manchester City man in this transfer window.

However, the report claims that purchasing Luiz won’t be straightforward for Arteta’s side as arch-rival Tottenham Hotspur are also eyeing a swoop for him.

Luiz is a deep-lying playmaker by trait but can also be deployed in the box-to-box role. He is technically sound, can link-up the play from defence to attack, has an eye for long-range passing, is efficient in taking set-pieces and also can contribute defensively as well.

The South American – valued at around £34m by Transfermarkt – possesses the necessary attributes to play in Arteta’s possession-based system. So, he would be a shrewd signing for Arsenal if they decide to purchase him in this transfer window.
