Arsenal interested in signing Man City star Aymeric Laporte
Arsenal are reportedly interested in signing Manchester City star Aymeric Laporte in this transfer window, as per the transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.
Despite enjoying a stellar campaign last term, the Gunners failed to continue their momentum during the business end following William Saliba and Takehiro Tomiyasu’s injury absence and as a consequence of that, they ended up losing the league title to the Citizens.
So, Arsenal have decided to sign Jurrien Timber from Ajax in a £38m deal to bolster their backline. However, unfortunately, the Dutchman sustained a knee issue against Nottingham Forest during the opening fixture of this season’s Premier League campaign.
It has been suggested that the defender has picked up a serious problem and he could be sidelined for an extensive period. So, writing on Caught Offside, Romano has reported that Arsenal are considering signing a new centre-back this summer following Timber’s injury and have earmarked Laporte as an ideal option.
However, the journalist claims that having already sold Gabriel Jesus and Oleksandr Zinchenko to Arsenal, Man City aren’t willing to let any of their stars join the Gunners as Mikel Arteta’s side have now established themselves as the Citizens’ title rival.
Laporte to Arsenal
So, it is going to be interesting to see whether Arsenal can manage to persuade Man City into selling the Spaniard this summer should they formalise their interest.
Laporte is a centre-back by traits but can also be deployed in the left-back position. He is comfortable playing out from the back, good in the air, excellent in defensive contributions and also possesses the recovery pace to play in a high defensive line.
The Spain international – valued at around £22m by Transfermarkt – is a highly talented player so he would be a great coup for Arsenal if they manage to secure his signature in this transfer window.
After struggling to find regular game-time at the Etihad Stadium last summer, it has been suggested that Laporte has become frustrated with his current situation and wants to move away to take a new challenge in his career.
So, it is going to be interesting to see whether Arsenal can manage to purchase him this summer if he eventually leaves the Etihad Stadium before the window slams shut.
