Arsenal ready to make January swoop for Ivan Toney
Arsenal are reportedly contemplating a January swoop for Brentford star Ivan Toney, as per the Mirror.
After enjoying a stellar campaign for the Bees last term, scoring 20 goals and registering four assists in 33 league appearances, the 27-year-old attracted the attention of several big English clubs ahead of the summer window.
However, after the striker’s eight-month suspension due to breaching the betting rules, those teams opted to cool down their interest in him. But, the striker’s suspension will be over in the middle of January so they are now planning to make a swoop for him in the winter window.
According to the report by the Mirror, Arsenal are interested in signing Toney and they would have made a concrete approach to secure his signature this summer had he not been banned. But, they are now looking to purchase him in January.
Toney to Arsenal
The report further claims that Toney has recently changed his agent with the intention of taking a new challenge in his career in the upcoming window.
The Mirror also states that Brentford aren’t going to let their star man leave for cheap if they are forced to cash-in and want at least £60m. Thomas Frank’s side have also made it clear that they will not sell Toney unless their valuation is met by his potential suitors such as Arsenal.
However, the report says that luring Toney to the Emirates Stadium won’t be easy for the Gunners as Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur are also keen on acquiring his service.
In the meantime, Fabrizio Romano has backed the Mirror report and claimed that Arsenal have already opened talks with Brentford to learn about the details of signing Toney in January.
Toney’s current contract will run until June 2025 so Brentford are in a strong position to demand a big fee in January. Therefore, it is likely that Arsenal will have to match the Bees asking price to sign the Englishman.
Toney is strong, good in the air, excellent in hold-up play, possesses the poacher’s instinct inside the box and also works extremely hard without possession.
So, the 27-year-old could be a shrewd acquisition for Arsenal if they opt to purchase him in the January window. However, having already got Gabriel Jesus and Eddie Nketiah in the squad, it remains to be seen whether the North London club eventually decide to make a firm move for Toney in January to add more firepower to their frontline.
