Arsenal eyeing swoop for Feyenoord star Santiago Gimenez
Arsenal have reportedly been keeping a close eye on the development of Feyenoord star Santiago Gimenez ahead of a potential swoop next year, as per the 90min journalist Graeme Bailey.
After enjoying a stellar start to this season, scoring 10 goals and registering two assists in seven Eredivisie appearances, the 22-year-old has attracted the attention of several big clubs around Europe with the Gunners’ among those to have registered their interest.
Speaking on the Talking Transfers Podcast, Bailey has said that Gimenez is an amazing player and several clubs have already expressed their interest in signing him.
The journalist further claims that Arsenal have been monitoring the development of Gimenez as of late so they could opt to make a concrete approach to sign him next year to bolster their attack.
However, Bailey states that acquiring Gimenez’s service won’t be straightforward for the Gunners as Tottenham Hotspur are also plotting a swoop for him.
Gimenez to Arsenal
Bailey said:
“Santiago Gimenez looks sensational by the way, he looks so good. He looks amazing to me. Teams have been watching Feyenoord, of which there is a few, they are the best team in Holland, we know Arsenal and Tottenham have been watching Gimenez as of late.”
It has recently been reported that Feyenoord don’t want to let their star man leave for cheap if they are forced to sell him next year and want a club record fee. It has also been suggested that the Dutch side want at least £35m but the fee could increase to £43m if he continues to showcase his best this season.
So, it is likely that Arsenal will have to spend a sizable amount of money to secure the Mexican’s signature should they formalise their interest.
Although Arsenal already have Gabriel Jesus and Eddie Nketiah in the squad, it seems Mikel Arteta isn’t happy with his current striker options and wants to sign a new prolific goal-scorer.
Several names have recently been mentioned as serious targets for the North London club with Ivan Toney being among them, but Gimenez is now emerging as a key option.
The 22-year-old has already showcased his goal-scoring prowess for Feyenoord in recent times and the North Londoners will be hoping that he will be able to replicate the same performance at the Emirates Stadium if he joins the club.
However, it is going to be interesting to see whether Arsenal eventually opt to formalise their interest in signing him in the upcoming transfer window.
