Arsenal keen on signing Belgian starlet Arthur Vermeeren
Arsenal are reportedly showing a keen interest in signing Royal Antwerp star Arthur Vermeeren in the January window, as per TEAMtalk.
The Gunners were seemingly looking to sign another midfielder after purchasing Declan Rice in the recently concluded summer window. Several players were mentioned as potential targets for Mikel Arteta’s side with Moises Caicedo and Romeo Lavia being among them.
However, the North London club eventually decided not to sign anyone after opting to keep Thomas Partey in the squad. However, it has been suggested that Arsenal have become frustrated with the Ghanaian’s persistent injury issues so the Gunners are open to cashing-in on him next year.
So, if Arsenal eventually decide to sell Partey then they will have to sign a new midfielder to replace the African and it seems Arteta has identified Vermeeren as a serious target.
According to the report by TEAMtalk, Arsenal have started to show a ‘keen interest’ in signing the Belgian so they could opt to make a concrete approach to secure his signature in January.
Vermeeren to Arsenal
The report further claims that Royal Antwerp could be open to letting their star man leave if his potential suitors such as Arsenal submit an offer of around £15m. So, Arsenal can manage to lure the 18-year-old for an affordable price should they formalise their interest.
However, TEAMtalk states that securing Vermeeren’s signature won’t be easy for the North London club as Manchester United, Barcelona, Brighton and Hove Albion, Liverpool and West Ham United are also eyeing a swoop for him.
After making his professional debut for Antwerp last term, the youngster enjoyed a promising debut campaign in the Belgian top-flight before starting the new season brilliantly this term.
Vermeeren is a versatile player as he can play in the deep-lying playmaker position but is also comfortable in the box-to-box role. He is technically sound, can play threading passes between the lines, has an eye for long-range passing and can contribute defensively as well.
The 18-year-old is an extremely talented player and possesses the necessary attributes to play in Arteta’s system. So, he would be a shrewd signing for Arsenal with a view to the long-term future if they sign him next year.
However, it is going to be interesting to see whether Arsenal eventually opt to formalise their interest in signing Vermeeren to reinforce their engine room.
