Arsenal prioritising to sign Aston Villa star Douglas Luiz

Arsenal are reportedly prioritising signing Aston Villa star Douglas Luiz in the upcoming transfer window, as per the transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.

The Gunners have seemingly been planning to sign a new midfielder to replace Thomas Partey – who has been struggling with injury problems over the last few years.

Aurelien Tchouameni, Arthur Vermeeren and Andre Trindade have all been mentioned as serious targets for the North London club in recent times, but Luiz is now emerging as the primary option.

Arsenal hold a long-term interest in the Brazilian as they tried to sign him at the beginning of last season. However, Aston Villa weren’t willing to let their star man leave and eventually managed to keep him at the club.

Despite failing to acquire his service last year, Arsenal haven’t given up on their hopes of purchasing him and are now contemplating making a move for him in the upcoming window.

Luiz to Arsenal

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Romano has reported that Edu appreciates Luiz very much and people at the club believe the midfielder would be the perfect option to reinforce the engine room. So, Arsenal are prioritising signing the Brazilian in the upcoming transfer window.

However, the journalist claims that Aston Villa don’t want to sell their star man so the North London club will have to offer a lucrative proposal to persuade Unai Emery’s side to cash-in.

Romano said:

“The top name, from what I’m hearing on Arsenal’s list is Douglas Luiz. The player was already on the list two years ago. Edu and others at the club really appreciate him, Douglas Luiz is considered the perfect midfielder by people at Arsenal, they would love to sign him and return on Douglas Luiz. Only a crazy, huge, important proposal could be considered in January. If Arsenal want to go for their top target in January, they’ll need to invest a lot of money.”

Luiz – valued at around £48m by Transfermarkt – still has more than two and a half years left in his current contract. So, Villa are in a strong position to demand a big fee if they are forced to cash-in.

Luiz is a talented player and has already showcased his qualities in the Premier League over the last few years. So, he would be a great coup for Arsenal if they manage to secure his signature.

However, it is going to be interesting to see whether Arsenal can eventually manage to sign the South American to bolster their engine room if they formalise their interest in the upcoming transfer window.
