Arsenal ready to splash the cash in January to bolster squad
Arsenal are reportedly planning to spend around £50m to strengthen their squad in the January window, as per Football Insider.
The Gunners opted to bolster several areas of their squad by splashing more than £200m in the last transfer window. However, it has been suggested that Mikel Arteta isn’t completely happy with his current options and wants to add more firepower at his disposal.
Centre-forward and the engine room are the two positions that the Gunners boss is seemingly keen on reinforcing as the Emirates club have been linked with a few options in recent weeks.
Ivan Toney, Santiago Gimenez and Dusan Vlahovic have been mentioned as potential targets for the North London club to beef up their attack, while Andre Trindade, Douglas Luiz and Arthur Vermeeren are reportedly on Arsenal’s wish-list to strengthen their engine room.
According to the report by Football Insider, Arsenal have decided to spend around £50m to make one signing in January to help Arteta mount a title charge in the second half of this season.
Arsenal ready to back Arteta in January
The report further claims that Arsenal are prioritising signing a new midfielder as a potential replacement for Thomas Partey – who has been struggling with injury problems over the last few years.
It has previously been reported that Luiz is Arsenal’s primary target to strengthen their engine room, however, it is highly unlikely that they will be able to secure his signature for a fee of around £50m.
So, Arsenal could be forced to shift focus to alternative targets. Vermeeren is a young talent and could be a shrewd signing for the North London club with a view to the long-term future if they opt to sign him. In addition, Arteta would be able to secure his signature with the reported £50m budget as it has been suggested that Royal Antwerp would allow the youngster’s departure if they receive an offer of around £17m.
However, the 18-year-old is still very young and needs time to develop his career. So, he is unlikely to make an impact straightaway and Arsenal need a new midfielder – who can help them challenge for the Premier League title this season.
Therefore, Andre could be the perfect option for Arsenal to strengthen their midfield department in January. However, it is going to be interesting to see whether Arsenal eventually opt to make a move for any of these options to reinforce their engine room in the upcoming transfer window.
