Pundit names the ‘only thing’ Arsenal missing at the moment
Ex-Arsenal star Ian Wright has said that Arsenal are currently lacking a world-class striker to become one of the best teams in Europe.
The Gunners already have Gabriel Jesus and Eddie Nketiah in their squad as the centre-forward option. Apart from them, Kai Havertz and Leandro Trossard can also play that role if needed.
However, while Havertz and Trossard aren’t natural strikers, Nketiah hasn’t proved his worth at the highest level yet. Jesus has showcased glimpses of his qualities over the last few years, but the Brazilian has recently admitted that finishing off chances isn’t his strongest suit.
So, it seems Arsenal have realised that they need to sign a top-class striker in the upcoming transfer window to achieve their lofty ambitions going forward as they have recently been linked with numerous centre-forwards.
Ivan Toney, Dusan Vlahovic and Santiago Gimenez have been mentioned as potential targets for the North London club, but Victor Osimhen is reportedly on their radar as well.
Now, speaking on his podcast, Wrighty’s House, the former striker has said that Arsenal are currently strong defensively but they need to sign players – who can score goals from half chances in tight games.
Wright urges Arsenal to sign a striker
The pundit further states that if the North London club sign a top-class striker then they can become a real force in Europe. Wright also says that Victor Osimhen would be an excellent signing and his addition would certainly address the only issue – which is the inability to score goals from half chances – Arsenal have at the moment.
Wright said:
“I would love him[Osimhen] to come! The thing is, when you look at we’re doing now and, again, I go back to the defensive side of what we’re doing and I know how important it is. For me, if I had any kind of coaching ability, my teams would be built from defence and that’s where we are at the moment, we’re very, very difficult to score against.
“If you get the guy that can take the half-chance when you’re playing in those games where it’s very tight, they’re putting you under a lot of pressure, you’re creaking but you’re hanging in there but then you make a chance and bam, you score, bam, you score again – before you know it, you’re under immense pressure but you’re 2-0 up.
“That is where that player comes into his own. That is what we need, that is the only thing we’re missing right now – the half-chance taker, who takes that chance when we’re under pressure. If we could get [Osimhen], we are causing problems across Europe.”
Signing a new striker would be an excellent decision for Arsenal. Osimhen has already showcased his qualities over the last few years so he would be a great coup for Mikel Arteta’s side if they manage to purchase him next year.
