Arsenal are reportedly keeping a close eye on Everton star Amadou Onana ahead of a potential swoop in January, as per the Daily Mail.

The Gunners have seemingly been planning to sign a new midfielder as a potential replacement for Thomas Partey – who has been struggling with injury problems over the last few years.

Joao Palhinha, Andre Trindade and Arthur Vermeeran have all been suggested as potential targets for the North London club with Douglas Luiz being mentioned as the primary option. But, Onana is now emerging as a serious target.

According to the report by the Daily Mail, Arsenal are looking to invest their January budget to bolster the engine room and defence. The report further claims that Arsenal have been showing interest in signing Luiz and Palhinha, however, the latter has already turned 28 and it’s unlikely the Gunners would make a move for him.

The Daily Mail also says that Arsenal are keeping a close eye on Onana and could opt to make a swoop for him if they fail to sign their primary targets.

Onana to Arsenal

After joining the Merseyside club last year, the Belgian has established himself as a key member of Sean Dyche’s starting eleven this season. The midfielder still has three and a half years left in his current contract so Everton are in a solid position to demand a big fee if they are forced to cash-in. Therefore, Arsenal will have to splash a big fee should they wish to acquire his service next year.

Onana – valued at around £43m by Transfermarkt – is good in the air, strong, technically sound, can play threading passes between the lines, is efficient in defensive contributions and also works extremely hard without possession.

So, he could be a shrewd signing for Arsenal if they purchase him in the upcoming window. However, it is going to be interesting to see whether Arteta’s side eventually opt to make a concrete approach to sign him to bolster their midfield position next year.

Meanwhile, after beating Brighton and Hove Albion, Arsenal will face off against title rival Liverpool in the Premier League next weekend. The North Londoners will be hoping that they will be able to beat Jurgen Klopp’s side and extend the gap at the top of the table.
