Arsenal could spend £87m to sign Viktor Gyokeres in January
Arsenal could reportedly splash a whopping £87m fee to sign Sporting CP star Viktor Gyokeres in the upcoming transfer window, as per the Portuguese outlet Correio da Manhã.
The Gunners have enjoyed a stellar campaign this term, sitting at the top of the Premier League table with 39 points from 17 games. They have also secured their place in the Champions League round of 16 as a group leader. So, the early signs suggest that they could go deep into this competition this campaign.
However, although the North London club have been displaying promising performances during the first few months of this term, it has been suggested that they lack qualities in their frontline so they need to strengthen that position to achieve success going forward.
So, the Gunners have seemingly prioritised strengthening their frontline in the upcoming transfer window to challenge on all fronts. Victor Osimhen, Ivan Toney and Dusan Vlahovic have all been mentioned as serious targets but Gyokeres is reportedly also on their radar.
However, according to the report by Correio da Manhã, Gyokeres has a £87m release clause included in his current contract and Sporting don’t want to let their star man leave for anything less than that in mid-season.
Gyokeres to Arsenal
But, the report claims that Arsenal haven’t been put off by that sum and they could opt to trigger the release clause to purchase the striker in the winter window. So, Sporting boss Ruben Amorim has lost his sleep with the fear of losing his star striker next month.
However, Correio da Manhã states that Chelsea are also keen on purchasing the forward to reinforce their attack and are ready to spend the £87m fee as well to sign him. So, Arsenal are set to face tough competition from their city rivals in getting any potential deal done for Gyokeres.
After joining Sporting from Coventry City, the striker has enjoyed a stellar campaign in Liga Portugal this season, scoring 10 goals and registering five assists in 13 league appearances.
Gyokeres is a talented player and has already showcased his talents in the Portuguese top-flight. So, he could be a great coup for Arsenal if they opt to purchase him. However, it is going to be interesting to see whether Arsenal eventually decide to formalise their interest in acquiring his service next month.
