Arsenal interested in signing Bayern Munich star De Ligt
Arsenal are reportedly interested in signing Bayern Munich star Matthijs De Ligt in the upcoming transfer window, as per The Athletic.
The Gunners have struggled with injury problems this season with defence being the most affected area. Jurrien Timber was signed last summer to reinforce their backline, but after sustaining a serious knee issue on his Premier League debut, the Dutchman has been sidelined over the last few months and he isn’t expected to return anytime soon.
Takehiro Tomiyasu has also been sidelined over the last few weeks owing to a calf issue. In addition, he is set to feature in the AFC Asian Cup for Japan in January so he won’t be able to serve the Gunners in the coming weeks.
So, according to the report by The Athletic, amid Arsenal’s recent injury problems, they could look to sign a new defender on a loan deal in January to add depth to their backline.
The report further claims that the North London club admire De Ligt very much and they could opt to make a swoop for him in January to bolster the defensive department.
But, The Athletic states that along with De Ligt, Borussia Dortmund’s Nico Schlotterbeck and Ajax Amsterdam’s Jorrel Hato are also on Arsenal’s radar.
De Ligt to Arsenal
De Ligt is a highly talented player and has already showcased his qualities at the highest level over the last few years. However, after joining Bayern Munich, the Dutchman has struggled to showcase his best in the German Bundesliga and as a result, he has lost his place in Thomas Tuchel’s starting eleven this season.
Nevertheless, the defender, valued at around £56m by Transfermarkt, is still young and has time on his side to turn his fortune around. So, he could be a shrewd signing for Arsenal if they purchase him in January.
If the North London club manage to secure his signature on a loan deal then he would certainly strengthen Arsenal’s backline – which would help Arteta challenge on all fronts in the second half of this campaign.
However, it is going to be interesting to see whether Arsenal eventually opt to make a concrete approach to sign De Ligt next month.
