Arsenal plot swoop for Simons as an alternative to Neto
Arsenal are reportedly considering making a swoop for Xavi Simons if they fail to purchase ‘priority’ target Pedro Neto, as per Football Transfers.
The Gunners have been looking to sign a new right-winger over the last few transfer windows to support Bukayo Saka. However, despite being linked with numerous options, they haven’t opted to sign anyone yet.
But, the North London club might eventually bolster their right flank this year as Saka has struggled to showcase his best in recent times, scoring a solitary goal in his last seven appearances in all competitions.
According to the report by Football Transfers, Arsenal have been following the development of Neto over the last few years and they are now prioritising making a move for him next summer as Mikel Arteta ‘covets’ the forward.
However, the report claims that Manchester City have also joined the race to sign Neto and they are keen on persuading the winger to move to the Etihad Stadium. So, Arsenal are set to face tough competition from the Citizens in getting any potential deal done for the Portuguese.
Arsenal looking to bolster squad
But, Football Transfers states that Arsenal are lining up Simons as a potential alternative option in-case they miss out on signing Neto and are ready to spend a fee of more than £31m to persuade Paris Saint-Germain to cash-in on the Dutchman.
Neto has displayed promising performances this season but his campaign has been disrupted due to injury problems. The Portuguese has had some injury issues over the last few years so the Gunners should be careful about that before making a potential swoop for him.
However, it is a bit strange that Arsenal are considering Simons as an alternative option to Neto. The 20-year-old is an attacking midfielder by traits but can also be deployed in the flanks.
I think Simons doesn’t have the necessary explosiveness to flourish on the wings in the Premier League and is more suited to play in-field.
Therefore, the Dutchman might not be an ideal option for Arsenal if they couldn’t sign Neto from Wolverhampton Wanderers. It is going to be interesting to see who Arsenal eventually decide to sign to reinforce their attack.
