Arsenal handed the opportunity to sign Martin Braithwaite
Arsenal have reportedly been handed the opportunity to sign Espanyol star Martin Braithwaite late in this winter window, as per the transfer journalist Graeme Bailey.
The Gunners have enjoyed a promising campaign in the Premier League so far this term, accumulating 43 points from 21 games and sitting only five points behind the league leader Liverpool. So, the North London club have been showing signs that they could mount a title charge this term.
However, it has been suggested that Arsenal lack qualities in their centre-forward position and they need to address that issue by signing a new prolific goal-scorer.
It appears the Gunners have acknowledged that problem so they have been exploring the market to sign a new forward as they have been linked with numerous names in recent times.
Ivan Toney and Victor Osimhen have been mentioned as the primary targets. But, either of them will cost more than £100m and Arsenal reportedly can’t afford to spend that much money in January due to FFP regulations.
Braithwaite to Arsenal
Now, writing on HITC, Bailey has reported that Arsenal have been handed the opportunity to sign Branthwaite before next week’s deadline and the player could be purchased for a fee of as little as £5m. So, the Emirates club can manage to sign the player for a bargain deal should they opt to make a move for him.
However, the journalist states that signing Braithwaite won’t be easy for Arsenal as Chelsea, Manchester United, Fulham, West Ham United and Wolverhampton Wanderers have also been made aware of the forward’s availability.
Strengthening the centre-forward position by signing a new prolific goal-scorer would certainly help Mikel Arteta in mounting a title charge this campaign. However, I think Braithwaite wouldn’t be the right option.
The Dane hasn’t been playing in the top-level football this season and has already turned 32. So, Arsenal would be better off going all-out to sign their primary targets next summer, rather than making any rash decisions late in this window.
However, it is going to be interesting to see whether Arsenal eventually opt to make a concrete approach to sign Braithwaite before the deadline.
