Pundit says Arsenal could win the league this season
Former defender turned pundit Jamie Carragher has claimed that Arsenal could beat Liverpool and Manchester City in the Premier League title race this season for one key reason.
The Gunners enjoyed a promising start to this season but after a wobbly few weeks ahead of the winter break, they fell behind in the title race for a brief period.
However, Mikel Arteta’s side have resumed the league campaign promisingly, winning three consecutive games. Most importantly they managed to beat the title rival Liverpool on Sunday and have now closed the gap with the Merseyside club. Arsenal are currently third in the table with 49 points from 23 games, sitting only two points behind the league leader Liverpool.
So, it appears Arsenal are ready to challenge for the league title once again this term having narrowly missed out on winning it to Man City last campaign.
Now, speaking on Sky Sports (via Football London), Carragher has claimed that Arsenal were better than Liverpool in every department last weekend but most notably they were very strong defensively.
Carragher predicts Arsenal’s title fate
The pundit further states that Liverpool never looked like they would be able to break down the Gunners’ backline. So, Carragher says that Arsenal are one of the best sides defensively this season and that could help them win the title.
Carragher said:
“They were better than Liverpool in all areas, but the thing that stood out to me was how strong they were defensively. I never felt at any point in that game that Liverpool looked threatening and a goal was coming. I said after the game that I actually thought the result was a better result for Manchester City, than it was for Arsenal.
“But, Arsenal do have a slim chance of winning a title, and that chance comes off the back of how good they are defensively. I think defensively, certainly in terms of goals conceded as well as the underlying numbers, I think defensively they are the best team in the Premier League.”
Arsenal have the best defensive record in the Premier League so far this term, conceding 22 goals and keeping eight clean-sheets in 23 games. Liverpool also have a similar record defensively this term but they didn’t look solid enough against the Gunners last time out.
So, it is going to be interesting to see whether Arsenal can eventually manage to lift the title after two decades this season.
