Fabrizio Romano hints at Jorginho’s Arsenal stay
Although it appeared like Jorginho’s time at Arsenal was coming to an end, Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that the Gunners have the option to extend his contract and Mikel Arteta is ‘really happy’ with his performances.
What exactly is the concern about Jorginho’s future, and what has Fabrizio Romano stated about the situation? For 12 million pounds (as reported by Sky Sports), Arsenal acquired Jorginho from their London rival Chelsea, giving the midfielder an 18-month contract, with an option to extend for a further year. When he joined the Gunners at the age of 31, few anticipated much from him, but the Italian has performed admirably.
Personally, I feel Jorginho has never had a bad game for Arsenal this season. He sets the tempo of the game, he helps the team effectively play from the back, he is a terrific passer of the ball, he always knows where his next pass is before he receives the ball, and that’s how important he is to this Arsenal squad when Thomas Partey isn’t present.
Notably, he never complains about playing time. Starts a game and delivers at least an 8/10 performance, as if he has been playing all games. And it’s not just his performance that’s been encouraging; he’s also been acting like a player coach. When you watch him warm up on the sidelines, you can see him coaching his teammates and giving them instructions.
It’s a shame Arteta hasn’t played him much this season, with Partey missing a significant number of games, but perhaps that will change in the next few months. If given the opportunity, as Arsenal look to win the Premier League title this season, Jorginho could be valuable and may justify why Arteta decides to retain him for one more year, as Fabrizio Romano implies he could.
Romano’s Claims About Jorginho’s Future
On X, the transfer guru confirmed that Arsenal have the option to extend Jorginho’s contract at the end of the season and says Arteta is ‘really happy’ with his displays:
“The option to extend Jorginho’s contract for one more year is still valid and it will be available until the end of the season for Arsenal.
“Mikel Arteta, really happy with his performances.”
These comments comes just days after Arteta heaped praise on Jorginho following his MOTM performance versus Liverpool, and it’s clear the Gunners boss loves the Italian midfielder.
Though there’s an expectation that Arteta will continue his midfield rebuild, which he started with the £105 million signing of Declan Rice last summer, this summer I’d understand why if he lets go of the likes of Thomas Partey and Mohammed and allows Jorginho to stay. The Italian could be the perfect mentor for the other midfielder to be signed in the summer and the other midfielders at the club.
