Why Arsenal can land £100m Ivan Toney for knock down price this summer
Fabrizio Romano explained in his Caught Offside Daily Briefing today why Arsenal may have the perfect transfer boast in their pursuit of Ivan Toney.
It has been widely rumored that Arsenal are looking to sign a clinical striker this year. It has gradually become clear that Gabriel Jesus and Eddie Nketiah, given their struggles in front of goal, cannot be counted on to lead Arsenal to glory.
Though several expected a striker deal to be completed in the winter, the transfer swoop never materialized due to the club overspending last summer and the necessity to comply with FFP. The Gunners had to temper their desire to recruit a striker until the summer.
Ivan Toney is one striker that Arsenal fans would not be surprised to see signed. For several months, the Brentford player has been linked with a move to Arsenal. Toney’s swoop during the winter transfer window was too difficult, as the Bees would have only been willing to let him go for a premium price.
Toney to Arsenal in the summer
Anticipating what can happen in the summer, European transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano confirmed that Toney is likely to depart Brentford. He claims the Englishman will, in the summer, become cheaper than his £100 million January asking price as he enters the final year of his current deal at Brentford, so it may be easier to sign him.
“Thomas Frank has spoken publicly about Ivan Toney being likely to leave at the end of this season.
“He’ll have just a year left on his contract, so his price tag will likely be lower than the £100 million it would have cost to sign him in January.
“I think this situation makes sense, and I don’t think clubs needed Frank to say that; it’s quite obvious and also one of the reasons why no one wanted to pay that amount of money in January. In the summer, it will be different, for sure.”
In case you’re wondering (after Romano’s comments), Brentford’s manager, Thomas Frank, recently said this about Toney on Tipsbladet:
“It is relatively obvious that Ivan Toney will probably be sold this summer.
“We also know what he is worth. I don’t think there are many strikers in the world who are better than him right now.”
It’s fantastic to hear that one of Arsenal’s main transfer targets will be available at a reasonable price. However, it is worth noting that clubs like Manchester United and Chelsea are also looking for a striker so are likely to offer competition to Arsenal.
Ultimately, we will have to wait and see what the summer transfer window has to offer.
