Arsenal told to spend £50m to sign Everton star Amadou Onana
Arsenal have been made aware that they will have to spend a fee of at least £50m to sign Everton star Amadou Onana this summer, as per Football Insider.
The Gunners are reportedly keen on signing a new midfielder as a potential replacement for Thomas Partey – who has been struggling with fitness issues in recent times.
It has been suggested that Douglas Luiz is Arsenal’s primary option to reinforce their engine room but they are exploring other options in-case they fail to purchase the South American with Onana emerging as a serious target.
According to the report by Football Insider, Everton want a fee between £50-60m to sell their star man this summer so Arsenal will have to spend a big fee to secure the 22-year-old’s signature.
However, it has been suggested that if Everton – who are currently in danger of relegation – fail to stay up in the Premier League then they could be forced to cash-in on the midfielder in a cut-price deal.
Onana to Arsenal
But, Football Insider states that Newcastle United are currently ahead of Arsenal to sign Onana so Mikel Arteta’s side are set to face tough competition from the Magpies in getting any potential deal done for the youngster.
Onana, standing at 6ft 5in tall, is quick, strong, good in the air, can dribble past opposition defenders in tight areas, is efficient in defensive contributions and also works extremely hard without possession.
The Belgian is a talented player and has showcased glimpses of his qualities in the Premier League in recent times. However, I think Onana lacks the necessary qualities with the ball at his feet to play in a possession-based system so he might not be an ideal option for Arteta’s side.
Therefore, the Gunners might be better off going all-out to sign Luiz over Onana during the off-season. However, it is going to be interesting to see whether the North London club eventually opt to make a concrete approach to secure the Everton star’s signature.
Meanwhile, Arsenal are currently third in the Premier League table with 49 points from 23 games, sitting only two points behind the table topper Liverpool. So, the Emirates club will be looking to continue their title charge by defeating West Ham United in the Premier League this weekend.
