Arsenal showing the most interest in Amadou Onana
According to Dean Jones on Give Me Sport, Arsenal are showing a keen interest in signing Everton’s Amadou Onana ahead of the summer transfer window.
Everton are having a tricky league campaign. Last November, the Toffees were docked 10 points for violating the Premier League’s profit sustainability guidelines. They face yet another point deduction for violating the rules for a second time.
The Merseyside club’s current situation casts doubt on their Premier League future; despite their efforts to stay in the league, they are at risk of relegation. If they drop to the Championship, they will be forced to cash in on some of their top stars, like Amadou Onana.
Arsenal chase Amadou Onana
Dean Jones claims that regardless of how Everton’s league season finishes, Onana and Jarrad Branthwaite are expected to leave in the summer. According to the transfer insider, Arsenal are the team showing the most serious interest in Onana.
“Those two are expected to leave Goodison Park even if Everton beat the drop, with Man United on Branthwaite’s case and Arsenal tracking Onana closest right now,” said Jones.
It’s no secret that Mikel Arteta admires the Belgian international. The 22-year-old is strong, fast and has a real presence in the engine room, while he is also excellent with the ball at his feet. Fortunately, Het Nieuwsblad reports that the midfielder is also open to a move to the Emirates in order to advance his career.
The Dutch report suggests that it will cost around £51m to sign Onana in the summer but Arsenal have shown recently they are willing to pay big money to sign their key targets, so they could be willing to meet Everton’s demands for the 6ft 4in midfielder.
However, Arsenal aren’t the only team interested. Teamtalk has linked Newcastle and Chelsea, and Foot Mercato has identified Barcelona and Manchester United as potential suitors for Onana. Therefore, Arsenal may be dragged into a bidding war.
We’ll have to wait and see how things develop over the coming months but I think Onana would be an excellent signing and could forge a formidable trio in midfield alongside Declan Rice and Martin Odegaard.
