Donyell Malen reveals his desire to join Arsenal
Borussia Dortmund star Donyell Malen has revealed that it is his ‘dream’ to play in the Premier League and wants to join boyhood club Arsenal.
It was previously reported that BVB were open to letting the Dutchman leave the club in January. But, they never received a concrete approach from anyone so a deal didn’t materialise.
The forward has been enjoying a productive spell in recent times, scoring six goals in the last seven appearances in all competitions. However, despite the 25-year-old’s recent impressive performances, Dortmund are reportedly still willing to cash-in on him.
It has been suggested that BVB could demand a fee of around £43m to sell their star man with Liverpool plotting a potential summer swoop for him.
However, speaking on Voetbalzone, Malen has revealed that it is his ‘dream’ to play in the Premier League and that he wants to rejoin Arsenal because they are his ‘favourite club’.
The forward further says that he previously trained with Arsenal’s first-team during his youth but he couldn’t break into the starting eleven so he decided to leave the Gunners to play first-team football elsewhere.
Malen to Arsenal
Malen said:
“I think, because I played in England as a youth, it is a dream to play in the Premier League. I think that is a beautiful dream. I went to Arsenal [when I was younger] so yes, them. I want Arsenal, my favourite club. I played there in my youth, I really wanted to break through there. Every now and then in a football career there are points at which you just have to make a decision.
“Yes, I was training with the first team, and I was 17, 18 at the time and I did make steps in the right direction, but I thought I had to just play professional football. I also saw my team-mates playing professional football while I was still playing youth football and I just knew [leaving] was the right thing to do.”
It has widely been suggested that Arsenal are set to sign a new prolific striker this summer to reinforce their frontline. Several names have been linked with a move to the Emirates Stadium ahead of the summer window with Ivan Toney and Victor Osimhen being suggested as the primary targets.
However, either striker will cost a fortune for Arsenal so Malen could be a cheaper alternative option if they opt to make a swoop for him.
But, there is a question mark whether the former PSV Eindhoven star possesses the necessary qualities to help Arsenal achieve their lofty ambitions. So, Arsenal would be better off signing Toney or Osimhen to bolster their attacking department this summer.
