Ex-midfielder Gilberto Silva has advised his former club, Arsenal, to sign Aston Villa star Douglas Luiz this summer.

It has widely been reported that the Gunners want to sign a new midfielder as a potential replacement for Thomas Partey – who has been struggling with injury problems in recent years.

A few names have been mentioned as serious targets for the North London club but Luiz is reportedly their primary option. However, it was thought that Aston Villa might not want to let their star man leave as they are looking to build a squad that can challenge for big prizes going forward.

But, it has recently been reported that the Villans are currently at risk of breaching the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules. So, they would be forced to cash-in on some of their star men this summer to stay on the right side of FFP rules.

Therefore, Aston Villa could opt to let Luiz leave the club if Arsenal submit a lucrative proposal. Now, during an interview with journalist Chris Wheatley, Silva has said that Luiz has managed to adapt to the Premier League and has been progressing well in recent times.

Luiz to Arsenal

The former midfielder further claims that Arsenal would be an excellent destination for Luiz to take the next step in his career and it would be a good move for the Gunners as well if they sign him.

Silva said:

“He’s [Luiz] progressing, he’s improving and he’s well adapted to the Premier League. Why not to Arsenal next season? It would be a great move for him and the club.”

It has been suggested that Aston Villa could demand a fee of around £100m to sell their star man so Arsenal will have to break the bank to lure the midfielder to the Emirates Stadium.

Luiz is an excellent player and has already showcased glimpses of his qualities at Villa Park in recent times. He possesses the necessary qualities to play in Mikel Arteta’s possession-based system so he would be a great coup for Arsenal if they purchase him.

However, it is going to be interesting to see whether the North London club can eventually manage to acquire his service ahead of next season if they formalise their interest.
