Arsenal cool interest in Ivan Toney, transfer insider reveals
According to The Sun, Arsenal are unlikely to make a summer move for Brentford’s clinical striker, Ivan Toney.
Mikel Arteta will almost certainly add a top striker to his squad. Yes, Arsenal appear to have rediscovered their goal-scoring form since the winter break, but we can’t forget they were also wasteful at times during the first half of the season.
In a number of games, it was evident that having a clinical No. 9 could have helped them win games they drew or lost. Over the last few months, various reports have linked Arsenal to several strikers throughout Europe.
One player heavily linked with a move to the Emirates is Ivan Toney. The Brentford striker’s goal-scoring abilities appeared to have piqued the interest of the North Londoners. Last season, in 33 league games, he scored 20 goals and assisted four. This season, after serving his betting suspension, he has four goals in ten games.
There is a notion that if it wasn’t for FFP, Arsenal may have completed a £100 million swoop to sign Toney in January. Arsenal have wait until the summer to finalize any deal, and interestingly, reports suggest they could now land Toney for as little as £50 million.
Toney not the solution
However, according to The Sun, an unnamed transfer source has said that Arsenal may no longer consider Toney as a solution to their attacking problems. Apparently, Arteta doesn’t believe his offense requires a conventional No. 9:
“Arsenal are now less interested. Mikel Arteta has a system and a way of playing, and he doesn’t think a conventional number nine like Ivan Toney is what they need,” the transfer insider told the Sun.
Interestingly, other targets like Viktor Gyokeres, Victor Osimhen, and Benjamin Sesko are in the same mold as Toney. So what does this suggest for Arsenal’s summer striker search?
We’ll have to wait and see, but until then, Gooners have little choice but to trust Arteta and his technical bench to do what’s best for the team this summer.
