Viktor Gyokeres Sporting Lisbon

Arsenal, as per Gazzetta Dello Sport (on page 8), are in the front row to sign Sporting CP striker Viktor Gyokeres and could land him in a bargain deal.

Day after day, it becomes apparent Arsenal will make a significant investment this summer to bring a top striker on board. According to reports from the last few days, the Gunners are willing to pay top dollar for Gyokeres.

The Swedish international’s contract with Sporting, which he signed after leaving Championship side Coventry, includes an £86 million release clause. However, Gazzetta dello Sport suggests Arsenal – who are leading the race for his signature – could sign him for just £43 million.

That may be a surprise given the 25-year-old has scored 36 goals and provided a further 14 assists in 49 appearances this season, and Sporting CP are known to sell their star players at a premium.

It’s surprising that no Premier League club attempted to sign him after his championship-winning performance last season. Sporting paid only £20 million for a player who scored 22 goals and assisted 12 times in 50 appearances for Coventry.

After just a few months in Portugal, the Swedish international had established himself as one of Europe’s best strikers.

Arsenal favorites for Gyokeres

Arsenal will reportedly compete with Chelsea for the Sporting CP hitman’s signing. However, Arsenal have the advantage in this race due to Champions League football.

Top players like to test themselves in the best competitions like the Champions League. Arsenal will undoubtedly compete in it next season; Chelsea will not, and they may not even participate in any European competition.

After ‘conquering’ the Europa League with five goals and two assists in nine games, Gyokeres must be eager to play in the Champions League next season. And he may do so as an Arsenal player if Sporting are ready to do business at £43m.

With Gyokeres, Arsenal could have the clinical striker they’ve been dreaming of. Next season, an offensive trio of Martinell, Gyokeres, and Saka could be one of the best in Europe.
