Arsenal are reportedly contemplating signing Portuguese star Joao Cancelo in the upcoming transfer window, as per The Sun.

Having joined Manchester City back in 2019, the 29-year-old established himself as a key player in Pep Guardiola’s starting eleven, helping his side win multiple league titles and a domestic cup competition.

However, after falling out with Guardiola, the defender was allowed to leave the club at the beginning of last year. Cancelo initially spent out on loan at Bayern Munich during the second part of last season but the Bavarian club eventually opted not to sign him permanently so he returned to Man City ahead of this season.

But Cancelo has once again been sent out on loan and this time to Barcelona. According to the report by The Sun, Barcelona have a £40m option to sign Cancelo permanently this summer but they feel the price is too high.

The report states that Arsenal have been alerted by this as they are also interested in signing him. The Sun claims that the Gunners want to sign a new fullback this summer and would be keen on signing a versatile player like Cancelo – who can play either fullback position.

Cancelo to Arsenal

The report says that Arteta already knows the player very well having worked together at Man City. So, Arsenal could look to make a concrete approach to acquire his service in the upcoming transfer window if Barcelona fail to keep him at the club.

But, The Sun claims that Cancelo wants to stay at Barcelona so it is going to be interesting to see whether the North London club can manage to persuade him to move to the Emirates Stadium should they formalise their interest.

Arsenal hold a long-term interest in Cancelo as they were linked with a move for him over the last two transfer windows, now they have once again emerged as potential suitors ahead of the summer window.

Cancelo is a top-class player and has already showcased his qualities at the highest level over the last few years. So, he would be a great coup for Arsenal if they can eventually manage to lure him to the Emirates Stadium ahead of next season.
