What Manchester City think of Joao Cancelo joining Arsenal
Not long ago, The Sun reported that Arsenal were interested in signing Joao Cancelo this summer. However, in an article for The Telegraph, Sam Dean reveals why that deal may not happen.
Arsenal are looking to add a quality defender to their squad due to frequent injuries to their full-backs. Recognizing Jakub Kiwior and Ben White as natural center backs, there have been times this season when Arteta has not had a natural full back in his matchday squad.
The situation could change with the signing of a versatile full-back, such as Joao Cancelo.
Cancelo to Arsenal
According to The Sun, Barcelona are not ready to pay £40 million to turn the Manchester City defender’s loan deal with them into a permanent one, but Arsenal could fancy themselves closing that deal.
Unfortunately, a move for Cancelo is improbable. Sam Dean has revealed why Cancelo becoming a Gunner is nearly impossible this summer. He thinks City are hesitant to do business with Arsenal against after recognizing they are a contributing factor to the North Londoners’ resurgence.
In 2022, they allowed Oleksander Zinchenko and Gabriel Jesus to join Arsenal, and this double raid boosted Arteta’s project significantly; they were able to compete for the league title. So Manchester City have realized that they cannot aid Arsenal anymore, and as they were reluctant to allow Cancelo to transfer to the Emirates last summer, they will surely not allow it this time around.
“In the summer of 2022, despite their well-publicised unhappiness at the nature of Arteta’s departure a few years earlier, City happily sold Jesus and Zinchenko to Arsenal, for a combined fee of around £75 million,” said Sam Dean.
“Last summer, Telegraph Sport understands, they were significantly less co-operative. Arsenal were interested in signing Joao Cancelo but City were not willing to strengthen Arteta’s squad again.”
It’s fantastic to know Manchester City worry about Arsenal. They see the Gunners as a genuine threat now. Of course this means they will no longer do business with us, but Mikel Arteta and Edu have an eye for talent and will be able to sign top quality alternatives to the likes of Cancelo.
Arsenal have also been linked with another dynamic full-back, Ferdi Kadioglu, according to TRTSport. Kadioglu has performed admirably for Fenerbahce in the Turkish Super Lig, so he could be the defender Arsenal target this summer.
