Arsenal register interest in signing Watkins this summer
Arsenal have reportedly expressed their interest in signing Aston Villa star Ollie Watkins this summer, as per the Daily Mail.
After moving to Villa Park from Brentford back in 2020, the 28-year-old has established himself as a key player in the Villans’ starting eleven over the last few years. The forward has been enjoying a stellar campaign this term, scoring 26 goals and registering 10 assists in 46 appearances in all competitions.
Watkins even guided his team to victory against the Gunners in the Premier League last time out by putting his name on the score-sheet and as a result, the North London club have now lost ground in the title race.
According to the report by the Daily Mail, Arsenal are planning to reinforce their frontline by signing a new prolific goal-scorer this summer and have identified Watkins as a serious option.
The report further claims that Mikel Arteta is a big ‘admirer’ of the Englishman so the Gunners could make a concrete approach to acquire his service in the off-season.
Watkins to Arsenal
The Daily Mail states that Aston Villa could demand a fee of around £70m to sell their star man so Arteta’s side will have to splash a huge fee to lure him to the Emirates Stadium.
However, the report raises a concern as to whether it would be the right decision for Arsenal to spend that much money to sign Watkins, considering he is set to turn 29 this year and his resale value will go downhill from now on.
Watkins still has more than four years left in his current contract so Aston Villa are in a strong position to demand a big fee for their star man if they are forced to cash-in this summer.
The Villa star is quick, strong, good in the air, is efficient in holding-up the play, possesses the poacher instinct inside the box, can link-up the play and also works hard without possession.
Watkins has already showcased his qualities in the Premier League in recent times so he would be a great coup for Arsenal if they purchase him. However, it is going to be interesting to see whether the North London club eventually opt to acquire his service to reinforce their frontline in the upcoming transfer window.
