Arsenal target Toney dubbed priceless as Brentford exit links persist
Brentford manager Thomas Frank, as per Football London, has just made an intriguing claim about Arsenal target Ivan Toney, which should pique the Gunners’ interest.
The popular belief is that Arsenal will prioritise a top striker signing in the summer transfer window. The last few months have seen Arsenal linked with a move for a number of top strikers, with Ivan Toney among their reported targets.
Back in the winter transfer window, speculation suggested that the Brentford star was Arteta’s top striking target. With Arsenal struggling in front of goal in the first half of the season, it was rumoured that Toney was one of the strikers who could propel them to the title.
However, a move never materialised, but Arsenal were fortunate to shake off their poor form in the second half of the season to find their way in front of goal. The league leaders may be scoring more goals lately, but a move for a striker is still expected this summer.
Sky Sports reporter Dharmesh Sheth recently told GiveMeSport that the likes of Arsenal may be able to sign Toney for around £60m at the end of the season.
Toney is priceless
However, Thomas Frank was recently asked about the potential fee for Toney to leave Brentford in the summer, and the Brentford manager insists the striker is priceless.
Frank said, as per Football London:
“You should ask Phil Giles (director of football) and Matthew Benham (owner) about that because they will be even better to answer that question. I’m pretty sure the answer will be that there is no price.
“I think it’s all about the narrative. If you can score five goals in five then suddenly your price is through the roof. If a striker performs consistently over time then there is a good price. I know Ivan is a good player and he’s proven that many times.
“Last season he was fantastic, he made his full England debut and I think he’s a very good player.”
With Toney entering the final year of his contract at the Gtech Stadium, he should be available at a discounted rate. However, it appears that Brentford are intent on driving a hard bargain and will try to hold out for as much as possible.
The 28-year-old would be a ready-made striker for Arsenal and should be able to hit the ground running if he did move to the Emirates. However, there are doubts over whether the Gunners would prefer a younger profile of player so we’ll have to wait and see whether they decide to formalise their interest in Toney this summer.
