Ivan Toney to Arsenal receives massive boost as Brentford identify replacement
According to Football Transfers (FT), Arsenal’s move for Ivan Toney may have gotten a significant boost as Brentford’s summer plans emerge.
Arsenal are believed to be searching for a top striker this summer. This season, Gabriel Jesus has only scored four goals and Eddie Nketiah has five. Kai Havertz has done well since starting up front but scoring goals has been a team effort, and next season Arsenal must find a consistent source of goals from their main striker.
Several top strikers have been linked with a move to the Emirates Stadium including Alexander Isak, Viktor Gyokeres and Joshua Zirkzee, however, Ivan Toney continues to be touted as a target.
FT now claims that Arsenal’s hopes of signing Toney have been given a boost as Brentford are already preparing for his departure. The report cites the Express as claiming that the Bees have lined-up PSV’s Johan Bakayoko as a replacement.
Brentford have openly admitted that Toney will leave this summer as he’s about to enter the final year of his contract and won’t sign an extension, so they need to cash-in while he’s still worth a significant fee.
Toney for £50m
FT suggests that the likes of Arsenal can sign the 28-year-old for £50m this summer, but the Gunners could try to offer Nketiah as a makeweight in any deal to lower the fee.
The report also states that Arsenal face competition for Toney from Manchester United and Chelsea, so there could be a fierce transfer battle between the Premier League giants for his signature.
We’ll have to wait and see how things develop over the coming weeks but Toney would obviously be a ready-made addition for Arteta as he’s proven in the Premier League.
However, the Gunners hierarchy may opt to target a younger profile of striker with the likes of Gyokeres, Isak and Zirkzee all 25 or under – at least three years below Toney.
