Arsenal make ‘contact’ to sign Bruno Guimaraes this summer
Arsenal have reportedly made ‘contact’ to sign Newcastle United star Bruno Guimaraes this summer, as per the transfer journalist Ben Jacobs.
After narrowly missing out on winning the league title last term, the Gunners have mounted a title charge once again this season. However, it looks like they are going to be pipped to the post by Manchester City in the title race again.
Mikel Arteta’s side are currently second in the table with 86 points from 37 games, sitting two points behind the league leaders Man City. So, the Citizens can win the Premier League trophy for four consecutive years if they win their final game against West Ham United on Sunday.
In the meantime, it has been suggested that Arsenal have already started planning their summer businesses to bridge the gap with Pep Guardiola’s side.
They have reportedly prioritised strengthening their frontline by signing a new prolific goal-scorer, but signing a new midfielder to bolster the engine room is also on their agenda.
Martin Zubimendi, Douglas Luiz and Amadou Onana have all been mentioned as serious targets for the Gunners with Guimaraes reportedly on their radar as well.
Guimaraes to Arsenal
Now, speaking to Caught Offside, Jacobs has reported that Arsenal ‘appreciate’ the Newcastle star and they have already made ‘contact’ with the player’s representatives before making a potential swoop this summer.
However, the journalist says that Guimaraes has a £100m release clause in his current contract and Arsenal don’t want to spend that much money to sign him. In addition, the transfer expert states that Arsenal will only look to sign him if the Magpies decide to cash-in on their star man for a lower fee.
Jacobs also says that Newcastle could opt to sell Guimaraes for a fee of around £80m if the Brazilian wishes to leave the club at the end of this season.
However, the journalist claims that Man City are also keen on signing him and they are looking to step up their efforts to secure the midfielder’s signature. So, the North London club are set to face fierce competition from their rivals in getting any potential deal done for him.
Jacobs said:
“Newcastle also don’t want to lose Bruno Guimaraes, but the decision could be taken out of their hands if someone triggers his £100m release clause, which is valid between late May and the end of June. As long as the clause is active, Newcastle are going to simply point to its value, but it’s understood offers exceeding £80m could be entertained should Guimaraes wish to leave for a Champions League club.
“It should be stressed, Guimaraes is happy at Newcastle, but it’s also true that both Manchester City and Arsenal have made contact with his camp. Manchester City are the most active of the suitors. Arsenal appreciate Guimaraes, but have no intention to trigger his clause meaning they would only enter the race if the price drops.”
Guimaraes is a Premier League proven midfielder so he would be a great coup for Arsenal if they eventually manage to secure his signature this summer to reinforce their engine room.
