Arsenal interested in signing Xavi Simons this summer
Arsenal are reportedly interested in signing Xavi Simons this summer, as per the transfer journalist Graeme Bailey.
Having joined Paris Saint-Germain from PSV Eindhoven last summer, the Netherlands international opted to sign for RB Leipzig on a loan deal ahead of this season to play regularly and develop his career.
The 21-year-old has been attracting a lot of attention from several big clubs around Europe after displaying impressive performances for the German side this season, scoring 10 goals and registering 13 assists in 43 appearances in all competitions.
Now, reporting on HITC, Bailey has stated that Arsenal have expressed their interest in signing Simons and they could make a concrete approach to secure his signature this summer.
However, the journalist says that purchasing the Netherlands international won’t be easy for the North London club as Chelsea, Aston Villa and Manchester City are also plotting a swoop for him.
Simons to Arsenal
In addition, Bailey claims that Simons is keen on joining Barcelona – where the youngster grew up during his childhood days – and the Blaugrana are also interested in signing him.
It has been suggested that PSG could demand a fee of around £50m to sell Simons but Barcelona can’t afford to spend that much money so they are hoping to sign him on a loan deal.
Therefore, considering Simons is willing to move to his boyhood club, Arsenal will have to put their best efforts to persuade him to join the club should they formalise their interest.
The Dutchman is a versatile player and Arteta likes to have players who can play multiple positions. The midfielder can be deployed in the box-to-box role and is also comfortable playing in the attacking midfield position. In addition, he can play in the left flank as well.
Simons has the efficiency of finishing off his chances, can create opportunities for fellow attackers, has the ability to play threading passes between the lines and also works hard without possession.
So, he could be a shrewd signing for Arsenal if they purchase him. However, having already got enough firepower in the number ten position, Arteta’s side don’t need to spend big to sign another attacking midfielder unless they opt to cash-in on any of the current options.
