Arsenal register interest in signing Marcus Edwards
Arsenal have reportedly registered their interest in signing Sporting CP star Marcus Edwards this summer, as per the Portuguese outlet O Jogo.
After ranking through the Tottenham Hotspur’s youth system, the 25-year-old decided to leave the Lilywhites to play regularly and develop his career. Upon moving to the Lions back in 2022, the Englishman showcased glimpses of his qualities in the Liga Portugal over the last few years.
However, Edwards failed to find regular game-time at Jose Alvalade Stadium last season so O Jogo reports that after getting frustrated with the lack of playing time, the forward is considering leaving ahead of next campaign.
But, despite the former Spurs star’s recent struggles, Arsenal have registered their interest in signing him after suitably being impressed by his displays.
However, the report says that Tottenham are also interested in bringing their academy graduate back to the club so Arsenal are set to face tough competition from their arch-rivals in getting any potential deal done for him.
Edwards to Arsenal
Tottenham reportedly hold 35% of the player’s rights so the Gunners’ arch-rivals will get some profits if Mikel Arteta’s side get this deal done this summer.
Edwards, valued at around £17m by Transfermarkt, still has two years left in his current contract so it remains to be seen how much Sporting demand to sell their star man.
Edwards is comfortable playing in the right-wing role but is also efficient in the number ten position. He is technically sound, can dribble past opposition defenders in tight areas, has the ability to play threading passes between the lines, can create chances for fellow attackers and also is efficient in finishing off chances.
Arsenal have been exploring the market to sign a new right-winger to support Bukayo Saka but, they haven’t made a move to sign anyone yet.
It has been reported that they could look to reinforce that position this summer with numerous names linked with a move to the Emirates Stadium with Edwards emerging as a serious option.
So, it is going to be interesting to see whether the North London club eventually opt to make a concrete approach to sign Edwards this summer to reinforce their frontline.
