Arsenal to ‘step up’ efforts to sign Nico Williams
Arsenal are reportedly planning to ‘step up’ their efforts to sign Athletic Bilbao star Nico Williams this summer, as per Caught Offside.
Despite mounting a title charge in the back-to-back seasons, the Gunners were pipped to the post by Manchester City on both occasions. So, it has been suggested that the North London club are planning to splash the cash ahead of next season to bridge the gap with Pep Guardiola’s side.
Mikel Arteta is said to be prioritising strengthening the engine room but signing a new prolific goal-scorer is on his wish-list as well. However, it appears the Spanish boss is keen on signing a new winger to strengthen the flanks.
According to the report by Caught Offside, Arsenal have expressed their interest in Williams and are already looking to ‘make a move’ to sign him. The report further claims that Arteta is pushing his side to secure the forward’s signature and the Gunners are hoping to get this deal done before the end of this month.
Caught Offside also states that the Spaniard has a £42m release clause in his deal with Athletic Bilbao so Arsenal will have to splash a sizable amount of money to sign him.
Williams to Arsenal
The report says that Liverpool, Barcelona, Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea are also keen on purchasing him but Arsenal are looking to get this deal done as quickly as possible to beat their rivals in this race.
After ranking through Athletic Bilbao’s youth system, the 21-year-old has already established himself as a talismanic figure for his boyhood club. Following his impressive performances in La Liga, Williams has secured his place in Spain national team in recent times.
Williams is a versatile forward as he is comfortable playing on both flanks. He is quick, technically sound, can dribble past opposition defenders in tight areas, has the ability to create opportunities for fellow attackers and also can finish off his chances.
The Spaniard is a highly talented player and possesses the qualities to become a top-class player in future. So, he would be a great coup for Arsenal if they eventually manage to lure him to the Emirates Stadium this summer.
