Arsenal keen on signing Nico Williams to bolster attack
Arsenal are reportedly keen on signing Athletic Bilbao star Nico Williams this summer to reinforce the attacking department, as per The Athletic.
It was previously reported that the Gunners wanted to reinforce their frontline by signing a new prolific striker in this transfer window with Benjamin Sesko the primary target.
However, having failed to persuade the RB Leipzig star to join the club, the North London club have reportedly decided to go for a wide attacker rather than signing a new centre-forward.
A few wingers have been linked with a move to the Emirates Stadium with Pedro Neto, Raphinha and Johan Bakayoko being among them. However, according to the report by The Athletic, Arsenal’s primary target is Williams.
It has been reported that Williams has a release clause worth around £50m in his current deal and the Basque club will only allow his departure should his potential suitors trigger it. Therefore, Arsenal will have to spend a big fee to secure his signature.
Williams to Arsenal
The Spaniard has been attracting a lot of attention in this transfer window having showcased his qualities for club and country in recent times. He has been playing a key role for Spain in the European Championship and has helped his nation reach the semi-final.
The 21-year-old is a technically gifted winger – who can play on either flank. He is quick, can dribble past opposition defenders in tight areas and also works hard without possession. Additionally, Williams has the qualities of making the right decision in the final third and can deliver final passes.
With the Gunners exploring the market to sign a new winger to support Bukayo Saka, Williams would be a great coup if they purchase him.
However, it is going to be interesting to see whether the North London club eventually manage to lure him to the Emirates Stadium in this transfer window to reinforce their frontline.
It has been reported that Barcelona are also keen on signing him and the player is open to joining the Catalan giants. Therefore, it won’t be straightforward for Mikel Arteta’s side to get any potential deal done for him this summer.
