Arsenal have advantage in the race to sign Mikel Merino
Arsenal are reportedly in an advantageous position to sign Real Sociedad star Mikel Merino this summer, as per the Spanish outlet Sport.
The 28-year-old has been displaying impressive performances in La Liga over the last few years, but with his current contract set to expire at the end of next season, he is likely to leave the Basque club this summer.
According to the report by Sport, Barcelona are keen on signing the midfielder and they have already held talks with the player’s representatives to learn about the details of signing him.
In addition, the report states that Atletico Madrid are also plotting a swoop to sign him, but Real Sociedad want more than £17m to let their star man leave and they’ll only sell him to the highest bidder.
Sport says Arsenal are also in this race and they have the financial muscle to outbid the Spanish clubs, therefore, they are currently in an advantageous position in this race. Mikel Arteta has reportedly approved the deal so Arsenal could manage to secure his signature in this transfer window.
Merino to Arsenal
Merino has been a regular member of Spain national team in recent times but he has been used as a substitute by Luis de la Fuente in this European Championship.
But, he has played his part in helping his country reach the final of this competition, scoring a late goal against Germany in the quarter-final. The Spaniard will now face off against England in the final and the Gunners fans’ eyes will be on him to see how he performs.
The 28-year-old is a dynamic midfielder – who is strong, good in the air and works extremely hard without possession. Additionally, he is technically sound, can play threading passes between the lines and also has the ability to chip-in with some important goals.
Merino has already showcased his qualities in the Spanish top-flight and the North Londoners will be hoping that he will be able to replicate the same performance in the Premier League should he join the club.
Nevertheless, it is going to be interesting to see whether Arsenal eventually manage to secure his signature in this transfer window to reinforce their engine room.
