Arsenal told Nico Williams would be a ‘dream signing’
Former Arsenal star Emmanuel Petit thinks that Athletic Bilbao ace Nico Williams would be a ‘dream signing’ for the Gunners.
Mikel Arteta’s side have been pretty quiet in this transfer window as they haven’t purchased anyone to reinforce their squad yet. However, it is expected that things will escalate over the coming weeks.
Arteta reportedly wants a new forward and midfielder but signing a new left-sided defender is also on his wish-list. The North London club have reportedly been in talks with Bologna to sign Riccardo Calafiori after agreeing on personal terms with him. So, it seems Arsenal are working to bolster their backline first before strengthening other areas of the squad.
Arsenal have been linked with a few wingers this summer with Raphinha, Johan Bakayoko and Eberechi Eze being among them but Williams is also on their radar as well
Williams to Arsenal
Now, during a recent interview (via The Standard), Petit has said that he watched the Spaniard in La Liga last season but his performances in the European Championship have impressed him the most.
The Frenchman further states that Williams would be a ‘dream signing’ for Arsenal and the forward could have a ‘huge impact’ for Arteta’s side should he join this summer.
Petit said:
“Arsenal’s dream signing this summer would be Nico Williams. I’ve been watching him in Spain with his club, but he has impressed me a lot during Euro 2024, especially against Italy. It was a nightmare for the right-back. I think this guy could have a huge impact at Arsenal.”
The 22-year-old has a £49m release clause in his current contract and the Basque club have no intention of letting their star man leave unless his potential suitors trigger his release clause. So, Arsenal will have to spend a big fee to lure him to the Emirates Stadium.
Williams is a highly talented player and could be a shrewd signing for Arsenal if they purchase him. However, Barcelona are reportedly interested in him as well with the player open to joining the Blaugrana, therefore, it won’t be easy for the North London club to broker this deal.
