Arsenal are reportedly keen on signing Real Sociedad star Mikel Merino this summer, as per the Spanish outlet Sport.

It has widely been suggested that the Gunners are planning to reinforce their engine room by purchasing a new midfielder in this transfer window.

Numerous names have been linked with a move to the Emirates Stadium over the last few weeks but the Spaniard has emerged as a new serious option in recent times.

The 28-year-old has already proven his worth in La Liga over the last few years and following that, he has also showcased his qualities on the international stage, helping Spain win the European Championship.

He was largely used as a substitute by Luis de la Fuente but he made his mark by scoring a late goal against Germany in the quarter-final stage.

Merino to Arsenal

With his current contract set to expire at the end of this season, he is likely to leave Real Sociedad this summer as he reportedly doesn’t want to prolong his stay with the Basque club.

Now, while citing and translating the print version of Sport, Sport Witness has reported that Arsenal are keen on signing Merino with the player tempted to move to the Emirates Stadium to play in the Premier League and the Champions League.

The report further claims that La Real could be open to cashing-in on their star man for a fee between £26m-£30m, therefore, the North London club can purchase him for an affordable price.

However, the Spanish outlet states that Barcelona and Atletico Madrid are also eyeing a swoop for him but the Blaugrana are behind in this race as they don’t have the financial muscle to beat their rivals.

Therefore, Arsenal or Atletico Madrid are the most likely destination for Merino should he eventually leave the Basque club before the end of this transfer window.

The Real Sociedad star is an experienced player and could be a shrewd signing for Arsenal if they purchase him. However, it is going to be interesting to see whether the Emirates club can eventually manage to secure his signature to bolster the midfield department.
