Arsenal ‘prepared to advance in talks’ to sign Mikel Merino
Arsenal are reportedly ‘prepared to advance in talks’ to sign Real Sociedad star Mikel Merino this summer, as per the transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano.
After making a slow start, the Gunners are seemingly looking to accelerate their efforts to reinforce their intended areas of the squad before the end of this transfer window. It has been reported that Mikel Arteta wants to sign a new left-sided defender, a midfielder and a prolific striker.
Having purchased David Raya permanently following a season-long loan last term, the North London club have also signed Riccardo Calafiori from Bologna.
Arsenal are now seemingly aiming to sign a new midfielder with Merino emerging as the primary target. The 28-year-old has already entered the final year of his current contract and is unlikely to renew his deal with Real Sociedad.
Therefore, he is expected to leave the Basque club over the coming weeks and Imanol Alguacil’s side are said to be open to cashing-in on him should they receive an offer of around £25m.
Merino to Arsenal
Writing on X, Romano has reported that Arsenal have already held ‘positive contacts’ with the player’s representatives and they are ‘prepared to advance in talks’ to agree on personal terms.
The journalist further claims that Arteta’s side are well positioned to purchase him and they will step up their efforts to sign him after selling Emile Smith Rowe – who is closing in on a move to Fulham.
Romano wrote:
“Arsenal are prepared to advance in talks with Mikel Merino’s camp next week, after positive contacts. He’s not only name on list but well positioned; price tag requested by Real Sociedad will be key. Arteta appreciates him; as soon as ESR leaves, Arsenal can proceed.”
Merino is a highly experienced player and has showcased his qualities in a top league like La Liga consistently over the last few years. So, he would be a great acquisition for Arsenal if they purchase him.
However, it is going to be interesting to see whether the North London club eventually manage to sign him in this transfer window to reinforce their engine room.
