Arsenal could reignite interest in signing Nico Williams
Arsenal could reportedly reignite their interest in signing Athletic Bilbao star Nico Williams, as per the Express.
The Spaniard has been attracting a lot of attention from several big clubs around Europe after enjoying a stellar campaign last term, helping his side win the Copa del Rey and qualify for the Europa League.
Additionally, he showcased his abilities on the international stage, guiding Spain to win the European Championship last month. He scored twice and registered a solitary assist in six appearances with one of those goals coming against England in the final.
Arsenal registered their interest in signing the Spaniard earlier this summer but Barcelona were looking likely the favourite to secure his signature in recent times.
But, the Express now states that Barcelona have ‘resigned to not signing’ the winger so Arsenal could look to revive their interest in signing him before the end of this window as he is a ‘top’ option on Mikel Arteta’s wish-list to bolster the frontline.
Williams to Arsenal
The report further claims that Williams has a £47m release clause in his deal so Arsenal can manage to secure his signature for a ‘bargain’ deal but his wage demands are ‘significant’.
The Gunners have been exploring the market to sign a new winger to support Bukayo Saka over the last few years but they haven’t decided to purchase anyone yet. So, it remains to be seen whether things will be different this time around or not.
Williams is a versatile forward as he is comfortable playing on either flank. He is quick, technically sound, can dribble past opposition defenders, has the ability to create opportunities for fellow attackers, can finish off his chances and also works hard without possession.
Therefore, the 22-year-old would be an excellent acquisition for Arsenal if they secure his signature. However, it is going to be interesting to see whether the North London club eventually opt to make a concrete approach to sign the youngster before the end of this window.
Meanwhile, Arsenal will commence their Premier League campaign on Saturday afternoon when they will face off against Wolverhampton Wanderers at the Emirates Stadium.
