Arsenal reach ‘agreement’ to sign Espanyol star Joan Garcia

By on August 20, 2024

Arsenal have reportedly reached an ‘agreement’ to sign Espanyol star Joan Garcia before the deadline, as per the transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.

After securing David Raya’s loan move permanent, the Gunners have signed Riccardo Calafiori from Bologna to bolster the defensive department.

Mikel Arteta also wants a new midfielder and Mikel Merino has been suggested as his priority target. Arsenal have been working on a deal to sign him and the expectation is that he’ll don the North London club’s jersey this season.

However, with Aaron Ramsdale’s future still uncertain, Arteta’s side are also looking to sign a new goalkeeper before the deadline. The Englishman was Arsenal’s first-choice keeper but following Raya’s arrival last summer, he was demoted to the second-choice option.

Therefore, it has been suggested that he is not happy with his current situation at the Emirates Stadium so he could leave the club to play regular first-team football elsewhere.

Garcia to Arsenal

Ajax Amsterdam previously expressed their interest in signing him and now, Wolverhampton Wanderers have also joined the race.

Writing on X, Romano has reported that Arsenal have earmarked Garcia as the priority target if Ramsdale eventually leaves over the coming days and Espanyol are already aware of the Emirates club’s interest.

The journalist further claims that the North London club have already reached a verbal ‘agreement’ with the player regarding the personal terms before getting the deal done with the Catalan club.

Romano said:

“Arsenal have already reached verbal agreement with Spanish GK Joan García on personal terms. He’s the priority target for Arsenal to replace Aaron Ramsdale if he leaves in final 10 days. Espanyol are aware of Arsenal interest but no official bid yet, depends on Ramsdale.”

The 23-year-old reportedly has a £21m release clause in his current contract so it remains to be seen whether Arsenal eventually opt to sign him by triggering the clause.

Garcia, standing at 6ft 3in tall, is a talented player and possesses high potential so he would be a shrewd acquisition for Arsenal with a view to the long-term future if they eventually purchase him before the end of this transfer window.
