Arsenal ‘on the verge’ of signing Mikel Merino

By on August 22, 2024

Arsenal are reportedly ‘on the verge’ of signing Real Sociedad star Mikel Merino late in this transfer window, as per the transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.

After being pipped to the post by Manchester City in the Premier League last season, it was thought that the Gunners would look to strengthen the squad this summer to close the gap with the Citizens.

However, Mikel Arteta’s side haven’t been as active in adding new reinforcements as was anticipated earlier. They have only signed Riccardo Calafiori from Bologna apart from making David Raya’s loan move permanent.

Instead, they have focused more on selling some stars and trimming down the squad. Emile Smith Rowe has been sold to Fulham, while Eddie Nketiah is closing in on a deal to join Nottingham Forest. Moreover, Albert Sambi Lokonga and Nuno Tavares have joined Sevilla and Lazio respectively.

However, it has been widely reported that Arteta wants a new midfielder and after being linked with a host of options, they eventually decided to prioritise signing Merino.

But, they started talking with Real Sociedad over this deal a few weeks ago and have taken a bit of time to seal the deal.

Now, writing on X, Romano has reported that Arsenal are ‘on the verge’ of signing the midfielder after ‘direct’ talks with Real Sociedad over this deal in London.

The journalist further claims that a few details still need to be clarified and after that, it will be a done deal with the Spain international keen on playing for the North London club.

Romano wrote:

“Mikel Merino, on the verge of joining Arsenal as expected. Direct club-to-club talks in London are proceeding very well and Merino has clearly asked Real Sociedad to go. Matter of details and then Merino will become new Arsenal player.”

The 28-year-old has entered the final year of his current contract so, Arsenal can manage to secure his signature in a discount fee and La Real are ready to sell him for around £34m, although he has a £55m release clause.

Merino is a talented player and has showcased his qualities in La Liga over the last few years. So, he would be a great acquisition for Arsenal to bolster the midfield department.
