Arsenal could sign Sam Johnstone late in this window
Arsenal have already signed Riccardo Calafiori from Bologna to bolster the backline, while Mikel Merino has joined the club from Real Sociedad to add depth to the engine room.
However, it has been reported that the North London club are also keen on signing a new striker and given Eddie Nketiah is on the verge of leaving the club, a replacement could be purchased before the deadline.
Meanwhile, the goalkeeping department is an area that Arsenal are looking to reinforce late in this window. With Aaron Ramsdale’s future still uncertain at the club, Mikel Arteta’s side are exploring the market to sign a new goalkeeper as a potential replacement for the Englishman.
Espanyol star Joan Garcia has been suggested as their primary target and they have already agreed on personal terms with him.
However, in addition to that, Arsenal are reportedly considering signing a new third-choice option and initially tried to purchase Daniel Bentley of Wolves.
Johnstone to Crystal Palace
Now, speaking on his YouTube channel, journalist Charles Watts states that Arsenal remain attentive to signing a new third-choice goalkeeper and could look to hire Sam Johnstone from Crystal Palace.
After losing his first-team spot to Dean Henderson, the former Manchester United is expected to leave Palace before Friday’s deadline.
The 31-year-old, valued at around £8m by Transfermarkt, still has three years left in his current contract so the Eagles are expected to demand a sizable amount of money to let their star man leave.
But, Arsenal wouldn’t want to spend much for a third-choice keeper. In addition, Johnstone might not be convinced by the role the Gunners may offer to him.
So, it is going to be interesting to see whether the North London club eventually opt to make a concrete approach to sign Johnstone over the coming days to bolster the goalkeeping department.
Meanwhile, Arsenal are one of the few Premier League clubs that have won their first two games of the season. After defeating Wolves in the opening fixture, they have also beaten Aston Villa 2-0.
Arsenal will be hoping to continue their winning run when they welcome Brighton and Hove Albion at the Emirates Stadium this weekend.
