Arsenal ready to break transfer record to sign Florian Wirtz

By on September 26, 2024

Arsenal are reportedly prepared to break the club’s transfer record to sign Bayer Leverkusen star Florian Wirtz, as per the German outlet Sport Bild.

The Gunners currently have Martin Odegaard as the only option to deploy in the attacking midfield position. Mikel Arteta purchased Fabrio Vieira to deputise for the Norwegian but the Portuguese never managed to push Odegaard for the first-team spot.

So, the North London club have now decided to send Vieira back to FC Porto to play regularly and develop his career. However, it now appears Arsenal have started exploring the market to sign a new number ten next year.

According to the report by Sport Bild (via TEAMtalk) Arsenal are interested in Wirtz and are currently a strong contender to lure the midfielder to the Emirates Stadium.

The report says Liverpool and Real Madrid are also keen on signing him but Arsenal are ‘fully committed’ to get the deal done and are prepared to splash around £126m for him.

Wirtz to Arsenal

Declan Rice is currently the Gunners most expensive signing and they purchased him from West Ham United for around £105m a couple of years ago. Now, Arsenal are ready to break their transfer record to sign Wirtz.

The 21-year-old enjoyed a stellar campaign for Leverkusen last term, scoring 18 goals and registering 20 assists in 49 appearances in all competitions.

He helped the German side win their first-ever Bundesliga title last term and also guided them to win the DFB Pokal trophy. At the start of this season, the midfielder helped his side win the German Super Cup.

Wirtz has started the new campaign brilliantly as well, scoring six goals and notching up one assist in seven appearances in all competitions for Leverkusen.

The youngster is comfortable in the attacking midfield position but can also provide cover in the flanks if needed. He is already one of the most talented players in the world so signing a player of his qualities would be a great coup for Arsenal if they purchase him.

However, it is going to be interesting to see whether the North London club can eventually manage to secure his signature by defeating Real Madrid and Liverpool in this race.
