Arsenal register interest in signing Ruben van Bommel

Arsenal have reportedly registered their interest in signing AZ Alkmaar star Ruben van Bommel, as per the transfer journalist Graeme Bailey.

The 20-year-old is the son of former Dutch midfielder Mark van Bommel. But, the youngster isn’t a midfielder like like his father, instead, he is a left-winger.

The forward has started attracting the attention of several big clubs around Europe after enjoying a stellar start to this season. He has already scored four goals and registered two assists in five starts in all competitions.

Reporting on TBR Football, Bailey has reported that Arsenal have been following Van Bommel closely for a few years but they have now started to step up their efforts to sign him after being impressed by his displays this season.

However, the journalist says purchasing the youngster won’t be straightforward for the North London club as Manchester City and Newcastle United are also keeping a close eye on his development.

Van Bommel to Arsenal

Arsenal decided to reinforce the flank by signing Raheem Sterling from Chelsea very late on deadline day this summer. But, the Englishman has joined the club on a season-long loan and is expected to return to Stamford Bridge at the end of this season.

Therefore, it seems Arsenal have started searching for new options in the market to strengthen the attacking department next year.

Van Bommel is 6ft 3in tall and is a technically gifted player. He is quick, strong, can dribble past opposition defenders in tight areas, has the ability to link-up the play, can play threading passes between the lines and is also efficient in finishing off his chances.

The Dutchman is a talented player but is still very raw and needs polishing to help him reach his full potential. Therefore, he wouldn’t be able to help Arsenal achieve their lofty ambitions just yet if he were to join the club next year. However, Arsenal could decide to sign him and loan him out to play regularly and develop his career.

It is going to be interesting to see whether the North London club eventually opt to make a concrete approach to purchase him next year.
