Arsenal remain keen on signing Sporting star Viktor Gyokeres
Arsenal reportedly remain keen on signing Sporting CP star Viktor Gyokeres, as per transfer journalist Ekrem Konur.
After moving to Jose Alvalade Stadium from Coventry City last year, the 26-year-old enjoyed a stellar debut campaign for the Lions last term, making 58 goal contributions in 50 appearances in all competitions. He even guided his team to win the Liga Portugal title.
Following that, he attracted a lot of attention in the summer with the Gunners among those reportedly interested in signing him. But, the player eventually decided to stay at the Portuguese giants.
Now, he has continued to showcase his best this campaign as well, scoring 23 goals and registering four assists in 18 appearances in all competitions. The Sweden international is currently the leading goal-scorer in the Portuguese top-flight and also in the Champions League.
Now, writing on X, Konur states that Arsenal remain keen on signing Gyokeres and they could make a concrete approach to secure his service next year.
Gyokeres to Arsenal
It has been reported that the striker has a gentleman’s agreement with Sporting to leave next summer to take the next step in his career and the Lions are open to cashing-in on him for a reduced fee of around £50m, although he has a £83m release clause in his existing contract.
Konur claims that Arsenal have also lined up an alternative option in-case they fail to lure Gyokeres to the Emirates Stadium with Atalanta’s Mateo Retegui on their radar.
Arsenal have been struggling with their goal-scoring issues in recent times as Kai Havertz has scored only five goals in 15 appearances in the Premier League and Champions League.
On the other hand, Gabriel Jesus has had injury problems this season and after returning to full fitness, he has been on the periphery thus far. Therefore, the North London club would do with signing a new striker next year.
Gyokeres is currently one of the most prolific goal-scorer in European football so he would be a great coup for Arsenal if they purchase him. However, it is going to be interesting to see whether the North London club eventually opt to strengthen the attacking department by signing the Swedish from Sporting ahead of next season.
