Arsenal eye raid to sign Real Sociedad’s Martin Zubimendi
Arsenal are reportedly planning to sign Real Sociedad star Martin Zubimendi, as per the Independent.
Following Thomas Partey’s injury-plagued campaign last term, it was thought that the Gunners would look to sign a new deep-lying playmaker to replace him in the summer.
They were linked with a host of options with the 25-year-old being among them. However, Mikel Arteta’s side eventually decided to hire Zubimendi’s former club colleague and compatriot Mikel Merino.
The 28-year-old isn’t a specialist holding midfielder, instead, he is more comfortable in the box-to-box role. Now, with Partey’s contract set to expire next summer and Jorginho also in the same situation at the moment, Arsenal will have to replace them if the duo eventually leave the club.
The Independent says that Arteta is keen on signing a new No.6 and have been keeping a close eye on Zubimendi’s performances before making a potential swoop.
Zubimendi to Arsenal
The midfielder has a £50m release clause in his current contract so Arsenal will have to splash a big fee to lure him to the Emirates Stadium next year.
The Spaniard was heavily linked with a move away from Real Sociedad in the last transfer window and Liverpool prioritised signing him. But, the player eventually decided to stay at his boyhood club so it remains to be seen whether the Reds revive their interest in signing him as they are said to be still planning to hire a new holding midfielder next year.
The Real Sociedad star is a technically gifted deep-lying playmaker and possesses the necessary attributes to play in Arteta’s possession-based system.
He has been a key player for the Basque club in recent times and has also secured his place in Spain national team, winning the European Championship in the summer.
Zubimendi is deemed one of the best midfielders in La Liga so he would be a great coup for Arsenal if they purchase him. However, it is going to be interesting to see whether the Emirates Club can eventually manage to purchase him to reinforce the engine room next year.
Meanwhile, Arsenal entered the international break following a 1-1 draw against Chelsea in the Premier League. Now, they’ll take on Nottingham Forest in the league after the hiatus.
