Arsenal plot swoop to sign Sporting star Geovany Quenda
Arsenal are reportedly planning to make a move to sign Sporting CP star Geovany Quenda, as per Caught Offside.
The Lions have enjoyed great success under Ruben Amorim in recent years, winning two league titles and several major domestic cup competitions. They have also had a stellar start to this season, winning all 11 games in Liga Portugal and sitting at the top of the table.
Moreover, they have been excellent in the Champions League as they are currently unbeaten in this competition and are second in the table just behind Liverpool. The Portuguese giants even thrashed Premier League champions Manchester City 4-1 earlier this month.
So, following Sporting’s recent success, big clubs around Europe have been keeping an eye on their star men. Amorim has already been poached away by Man Utd to replace Erik ten Hag. Moreover, Viktor Gyokeres and Ousmane Diomande have been linked with a move away from the club in recent times.
Quenda to Arsenal
Now, Caught Offside states that Quenda has also started attracting the attention of several big clubs around Europe with Arsenal among those to have registered their interest.
The 17-year-old has a £84m release clause in his current contract and has a contract until 2027 with Sporting. Therefore, Arsenal will have to invest a large sum to lure him away from Jose Alvalade Stadium next year.
However, the report says Newcastle United, Manchester United, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City, Bayer Leverkusen, RB Leipzig and Juventus are also planning to purchase him.
United have an advantage in this race due to the Amorim connection therefore, it will be extremely difficult for the North London club to lure him to the Emirates Stadium next year.
Quenda is predominantly a left-footed right-winger but played in the RWB role under Amorim for Sporting. He is quick, technically sound, can dribble past opposition defenders in tight areas, has the ability to play threading passes between the lines and also works hard without possession.
The Portuguese is a highly talented player and possesses the potential to become a top-class forward in future. It is going to be interesting to see whether Arsenal can eventually manage to beat rivals in this race to sign him.
