Arsenal keen on signing Athletic Bilbao star Nico Williams
Arsenal are reportedly keen on signing Athletic Bilbao star Nico Williams, as per Spanish outlet Fichajes.
Gabriel Martinelli has been the first-choice left-winger for the Gunners in recent years and Leandro Trossard usually plays as a second-fiddle role to the Brazilian.
Raheem Sterling joined the club on a loan deal last summer but he has found it difficult to get regular game-time at the Emirates Stadium thus far this season.
Although Martinelli works extremely hard without possession and always puts his best efforts in, he hasn’t been at his best in front of the goal this campaign, scoring only three times in the Premier League.
Trossard mostly featured in the attacking midfield position in recent times amid Martin Odegaard’s injury absence but he has managed to find the back of the net only twice in the league so far.
Williams to Arsenal
As a result, Arsenal have struggled in front of the goal this season so Arteta’s side would do with signing an upgrade to the duo next year to strengthen the left-wing position.
Fichajes states that the North London club are interested in Williams and they have the financial power to hire the Spaniard by paying his £50m release clause and offering him a lucrative contract offer.
The report says Liverpool and Newcastle United are also in this race but Arsenal are showing the most keen interest in luring the 22-year-old away from the San Mamés Stadium. Barcelona are in this race as well but they don’t have the financial power to get the deal done.
Williams is a left-winger by traits and has been playing in this position predominantly in recent times. But, he can also provide cover in the right flank if required.
The Athletic Bilbao star was heavily linked with a move away from his boyhood club last summer following a promising display in the European Championship with Spain but, he stayed at the Basque club.
Williams is a top-class player and possesses the potential to become a world-class forward in future. So, he would be a great acquisition for Arsenal if they can manage to purchase him.
