Arsenal interested in signing Leipzig star Geertruida

By on November 29, 2024

Arsenal are reportedly interested in signing RB Leipzig star Lutsharel Geertruida, as per Caught Offside.

After coming through Feyenoord’s youth system, the 24-year-old made his senior debut for the Dutch giant back in 2017 before enjoying success in the next few years there.

The defender decided to leave his boyhood club last summer to join Leipzig and upon moving to Red Bull Arena, the Dutchman has had a fine start to this season, scoring a solitary goal and keeping three clean-sheets in six league starts.

Caught Offside claim that Arsenal have expressed their interest in signing Geertruida and they could make a concrete approach to secure his service next year.

Having recently joined Leipzig, he still has a contract until 2029 but he has expressed his desire to leave to move to the Premier League. Therefore, the German side might be forced to cash-in on him and in that case, they would be ready to sell him for a fee of at least £33m.

Geertruida to Arsenal

However, the report say purchasing the defender won’t be easy for the North London club as Tottenham Hotspur, Liverpool, Chelsea, Borussia Dortmund, Arsenal, Aston Villa and Olympique Lyonnais are also in this race.

However, considering the player’s desire is to play in the Premier League, Dortmund and Lyon would be behind the English clubs in this race.

The Leipzig star is efficient in the right-back position as well as in the centre-back role. He is quick, strong, comfortable playing out from the back and is also efficient in defensive contributions.

Mikel Arteta already has enough resources in the defensive department but Takehiro Tomiyasu has been struggling with fitness problems in recent times. Therefore, signing a new defender to replace him would be the right decision.

The Spanish boss likes to have a versatile player like Geertruida in his defensive department so he would be the perfect option for the Emirates club. However, it is going to be interesting to see whether Arsenal eventually opt to make a concrete approach to sign him next year.

Meanwhile, Arteta’s side are currently fourth in the Premier League table with 22 points from 12 games, sitting nine points behind the league leaders Liverpool.
