Arsenal make approach to sign AC Milan’s Rafael Leao
Arsenal have reportedly made contact over a deal to sign AC Milan forward Rafael Leao, as per Football Transfers.
After joining the Rossoneri from LOSC Lille back in 2019, the Portuguese has been a key player for the Italian giant in recent years, helping his side win the Scudetto title a few seasons ago.
However, he has been in-and-out of new manager Paulo Fonseca’s starting eleven this season. Despite that, Leao has showcased his qualities, making nine goal contributions in 14 starts in all competitions.
Now, Football Transfers report that Arsenal are interested in strengthening their left side of the attack and have identified the Portugal international as a serious option.
The Gunners have even held talks with the player’s representatives to learn about the details of signing him but their interest is still at an early stage.
Leao to Arsenal
Leao is completely focusing on this season with Milan and has no intention of leaving in mid-season but he may change his stance at the end of this season.
After signing a contract extension last year, the 25-year-old still has a contract until 2028 at San Siro Stadium. Therefore, Fonseca’s side are in a strong position to demand a big fee to sell the £62m-rated forward next year.
Leao likes to play in the left flank and Arsenal currently have Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard as the two options to deploy in this area. With the Belgian set to turn 31 next year and his existing deal will expire in 2026, the North London club may decide to cash-in on him at the end of this season.
Trossard was even linked with a move away from the Emirates Stadium last summer but Arteta eventually decided to keep hold of him. The Spanish boss also has Raheem Sterling to use in the LW position. However, the Englishman has joined the club on a loan deal and is likely to return to Stamford Bridge next summer.
Leao is a talented player and could be a great coup for Arsenal if they purchase him. However, it remains to be seen whether the Emirates club eventually make a concrete approach to sign him next summer.
