Arsenal eye swoop to sign Wolves ace Matheus Cunha
Arsenal are reportedly planning to make a move to sign Wolverhampton Wanderers forward Matheus Cunha, as per The Athletic.
After moving to the Molineux Stadium last year, the Brazilian has established himself as a talismanic figure for the West Midlands club. He enjoyed a productive campaign last term, making 19 goal contributions in 29 league starts.
Wolves have had a dire first half of this season, languishing in the relegation zone but Cunha has been displaying his goal-scoring prowess, scoring nine goals and registering three assists in 17 league appearances.
So, it is not a surprise to see that the South American has started attracting the attention of big English clubs. The Athletic report that Arsenal are interested in Cunha and have been keeping a close eye on him.
However, the Wolves star isn’t a priority target for Arsenal and they would only look to sign him if Wolves get relegated at the end of this season and he will become available for a reasonable price.
Cunha to Arsenal
The forward is valued at around £41m by Transfermarkt and has a contract until 2027. So, Wolves are in a strong position to demand a big fee to let him leave next year but if they fail to keep their top-flight status then they will be forced to sell him for cheap.
Cunha is a versatile player as he can play anywhere across the frontline but he prefers to play on the left side of the attack. He is quick, strong, efficient in finishing off his chances, has an eye for scoring goals from distance and also works hard without possession.
The Gunners have Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard as the two specialist options to deploy in the left flank, while Gabriel Jesus can also provide cover in this role if needed.
But, neither Trossard nor Martinelli has been able to showcase their productivity in front of the goal thus far this season. So, Arsenal could do with signing an upgrade in this position.
However, it is going to be interesting to see whether the North London club eventually make a concrete approach to sign Cunha next year to strengthen the attacking department.
